As a locum worker, registering with the DBS update service for a small fee of £13 per year can make the transition between roles much quicker.

On average, it takes two weeks (sometimes longer) for DBS certificates to be issued, whereas those already registered with the DBS update service can simply give employers permission to carry out an immediate online ‘status check’. This instantly confirms whether the information on your DBS certificate has changed since it was issued.

How does the DBS update service work?

This subscription service allows you to keep your DBS certificate up-to-date, since it draws its information directly from live police data.

What do I need to do?

Here’s the crucial information; you must opt to join the DBS update service within 19 days of your DBS certificate being issued.

Once you have joined the service, you’ll receive an online account which will allow you to:
  • Give employers permission to check your certificate online in addition to being able to see who has checked it in the past
  • Take your certificate from one job to the next instead of re-applying for a new certificate every time you start a new job
Do remember though, as with a standard DBS certificate, the update service will only be relevant to the type of role you initially registered for.
