Career Centre

"I've been working with Sanctuary for over a year now.

I get all the good managers at CRI, so my job is usually enjoyable too - so that can't be bad!"

Career progression in criminal justice

Once you have qualified as a criminal justice professional in probation or youth offending services, there are opportunities to gain experience in specialist areas or take on more supervisory and leadership roles.

Senior Probation Officer

A senior probation officer manages a team of probation officers and is responsible for their performance in managing offenders. Some senior probation officers work in specialist roles such as with high-risk adult offenders, with sex offenders or on community payback.

Management roles

Highly experienced probation staff may, in time, become managers. This will take them away from contact with offenders to organising services, managing budgets, setting or implementing policies and liaising with other agencies.

Senior Youth Offending Team (YOT) Officer

Experienced and qualified YOT officers work mainly with high risk and vulnerable young people. There may be opportunities to work in specialist roles such as running prevention schemes with young people at risk of offending or working with more serious offenders.
Senior YOT officers can also be involved in supervising other staff, multi-agency working, and developing prevention or restorative justice programmes.

Youth Offending Team (YOT) Manager

Managers in YOTs will have much less contact with young offenders and instead will be responsible for the operations of the service. Their job is to ensure the team is successfully managing the risk posed by each young offender (the risk of reoffending as well as the risk to the public) and that assessments are carried out by YOT staff.

Promotion opportunities in YOTs may depend on the size of the team, experience and qualifications.
